Probiotics and Prebiotics in our lives

Bacteria is all around us and is a very important component within our bodies to function properly. With the concept of sanitization and antibiotics in modern society, we are less prone to run into the necessary bacteria our gut requires. This is why your doctors suggest taking a supplemental probiotic to guarantee your system has the bacteria required. Probiotics are species of health-promoting bacteria that we require for proper digestion of food and immune defense against illness promoting bacteria, viruses and fungi. Ten years ago, this was a foreign concept for many and most people but probiotics, the good bacteria naturally found in our guts, have now become a household name. However, prebiotics are a relatively newer concept which are making news these days.

What are prebiotics? Prebiotics are natural carbohydrates that are hard for humans to digest, meaning they stick around long enough to remain intact at the end of the digestive process. They work to actively promote the growth of good bacteria in the digestive system. More simply, prebiotics are the food for the probiotics in our systems.

How do prebiotics and probiotics work together? When prebiotics meet probiotics in the colon, fermentation takes place resulting in the production of short-chain fatty acids, lactate and gas. When consumed, studies show that prebiotics lead to an increase in the growth of good bacteria in the gut. The more good bacteria, the less opportunity for bad bacteria to grow and take over. This leads to a longer term healthy gut and overall wellness.

Where can I find prebiotics and probiotics in my diet? You probably don’t realize that you are already eating them! You can find both prebiotics and probiotics in some pretty common foods

Prebiotics
  • Bananas
  • Onions
  • Garlic
  • Leeks
  • Asparagus
  • Artichokes
  • Soybeans
  • Whole-wheat foods

Probiotics
  • Yogurt
  • Kefir products
  • Aged cheeses
  • Kimchi
  • Sauerkraut
  • Miso
  • Tempeh

The real magic happens when these two types of products are eaten together (think: bananas on top of yogurt). And if you find these foods aren’t on your normal grocery list, you can always opt for a nutritional supplement. We recommend Innate Choice probiotics which you can pick up at your next office visit.

Are there long term benefits of prebiotics and probiotics? Research shows that the total number of bacteria living in healthy adults amount to 10 times more bacteria than number of cells in the human body! In fact, a healthy digestive tract should contain over 2 pounds of bacteria. When your body is supplied with the necessary health-promoting bacteria, bad bacteria is unable to grow leading to disease. This leads to overall wellness and has shown to help with these digestive afflictions:

  • Assist in treatment of diarrhea
  • Reduce irritable bowel symptoms
  • Reduce the recurrence of bladder cancer
  • Prevent various infections in the intestines
  • Prevent and treat urinary tract and yeast infections
  • Prevent and treat eczema, especially in children
  • Prevent and treat symptoms of cold and flu

Fish Oils with Omega-3 fatty acid: Why it is essential to your health

It is common perception that eating a ton of fat may not be the healthiest choice in our diet. This leads to some who may wonder, “Why is my doctor recommending me to take a fat supplement?” Contrary to popular belief, ingesting fat is not a bad thing, but the kind of fat you are regularly eating is. Fat is critical for our bodies to function. It makes up the majority of your brain and surrounds every nerve allowing proper signal communication and function throughout your body. When talking about fat, there is good fat and there is bad fat. Processed food like butter and dairy contain the “bad” fats. This is why we need to supplement our diet with the “good” fat for our healthiest selves. Your doctors recommend taking an omega-3 fatty acid found in anchovies and sardine fish oil for this very reason.

So, what is omega-3? Omega-3 is an essential fatty acid which is found in fish, specifically fish oils. For any nutrient to be defined as “essential” means it is required for healthy cell function, therefore any deficiency results in diminished cell function and overall diminished health. We are genetically designed to ingest and digest omega-3 essential fatty acids which are made of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) in the form they are found in nature. If science and experience have taught us anything it is that we cannot improve upon nature and the way we are meant to function.

Research indicates that deficient intake of these essential omega-3 fatty acids is a causal factor to many illnesses including cancer, heart disease, depression, arthritis, stroke, Alzheimer’s, ADHD, diabetes, obesity, digestive disease, osteoporosis, skin problems, vision problems, and developmental delays in children. Omega-3 fatty acid is important for regulating blood sugar, brain health, emotional health, bone health, digestive health, immune health and cancer prevention.2 There is research validating the ingestion of fish oil containing EPA and DHA leading to a decrease in cortical gray matter loss. Loss of brain gray matter leads to neurological disease such as schizophrenia and Alzheimer’s. This evidence proves the necessity for fatty acid in gray matter and overall brain health.3 The take home message: EVERY human requires sufficient intake of EPA and DHA which has nothing to do with which disease they may or may not have. If you are a human, you need EPA and DHA found in omega-3 – period.

The typical American’s diet is deficient in omega-3 and too much consumption of the unsaturated omega-6 fatty acids leading to widespread inflammation and disease. For most, omega-6 intake is almost 11 times greater than omega-3. For better health, the ratio should be closer to 1:1.1 Eating wild and farmed fish out of our world’s polluted water leads to an increase in toxins like mercury and polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) chemicals. This is why Thrive Chiropractic Wellness Center’s doctors recommend Innate Choice Omega Sufficiency omega-3 fish oil because all of those nasty toxins are removed. To receive sufficient amounts from Innate Choice supplements, adults should take 4 capsules and children take 2 capsules for every 40 pounds of body weight. If you have questions or comments, make sure to ask your doctor at your next visit at Thrive CWC. Hope you have a happy healthy day!

Food Inc.

EVERYONE should watch this movie.  If you care about the quality of food you are eating this movie is a must.  It will definitely open your eyes to the industrial food business.  The educated food shopper is the smart food shopper.  The latest movement by some companies is to get congress to pass acceptance of more and more GMOs (genetically modified foods) allowing companies to ENGINEER food in a lab now to get them to grow bigger, faster, fatter, cheaper.  This practice has profound negative effects on our health.  This video will change the way you think about food.

Walking the Walk

Would you ever go to a dentist that has bad teeth?  Would you ever take weight loss advice from someone who is excessively overweight?  I certainly hope not.  I get so frustrated when I go to a seminar on nutrition and wellness living and see the presenter slugging back a Coke (or even more disturbing- a Diet Coke), being overweight, and/or slouching.  It blows my mind.  I believe that it would be hypocritical to recommend a healthy harmonious lifestyle to my patients without living that life myself.  I practice what I preach.  I tell all of my patients that if I recommend something for them to do or try (dietary suggestions, exercise recommendations, detoxifications, etc.) they can rest assured that it is something that I myself do or have tried.

I treated quite a few athletes who were participating in the Chicago Marathon last year and who were experiencing various muscle aches as a result of the extensive training.  Many asked my opinion on ways to avoid DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness).  I started recommending ice baths, but it quickly occurred to me that I have never actually tried an ice bath myself.  Because I believe so strongly that I must be able to speak to my patients from experience when making recommendations, I decided to test the suggested ice bath after my next flag football game.  That next Sunday after my game I ran by 7-Eleven and picked up 3 twenty pound bags of ice.  I filled our tub at home with enough water to cover my torso and allowed my wife the honors of dumping the 60 pounds of ice over my submerged body.  I’m certain she enjoyed this way more than I did, but the point was that I could now speak from experience about the ice bath when recommending it.  You can assume that any information you find here on my Health Blog has already been doctor tested and approved.

Flyin' High Breakfast Smoothie

Most of my patients know that I begin each day with a nutritional smoothie, and I’m often asked for my recipe.  If you are looking to start your day off right nutritionally, a smoothie is a great way to accomplish this.  Smoothies allow you to get a jump start on your nutrition first thing in the morning while avoiding the pitfalls of traditional breakfast foods, or in my words "The Beige Diet".  What's the "Beige Diet" you ask, please let me explain.  The beige diet is what the traditional American breakfast consists of, all beige foods with very little to no nutritional value.  For example, waffles, pancakes, cereal, muffins, bagels, toast, french toast, donuts, cereal bars, etc (I am sure you get the point).  These "beige" foods don't supply us with the nutritional jumpstart we need to get our day off on the right foot and, in fact, negatively influence our concentration and energy levels throughout the day.  Research has shown that kids with ADD, ADHD, or concentration issues can be greatly influenced by avoiding these foods and a smoothie is a great way to accomplish that.  Below you will find one of my most popular recipes for your morning smoothie that even kids will love.  You can hide so much nutrition in a smoothie, meaning vegetables, that the kids won't even know and the taste won’t be affected.

Dr. J’s Healthy Breakfast Smoothie Recipe (makes two servings)
1 cup spinach
1 carrot
1 cup of globe grapes
3 slices of cucumber
1 flower of broccoli
1 celery stalk
1 kiwi
1 leaf of collard greens or other green leafy vegetable
2 cups frozen blueberries
1/2 avacado
1 banana
1 tablespoon of flax seed
3 teaspoons of Innate Choice Fish Oil (available at ThriveCWC)
2 scoops of SP Complete Dairy Free (available at ThriveCWC)
