Fish Oils with Omega-3 fatty acid: Why it is essential to your health

It is common perception that eating a ton of fat may not be the healthiest choice in our diet. This leads to some who may wonder, “Why is my doctor recommending me to take a fat supplement?” Contrary to popular belief, ingesting fat is not a bad thing, but the kind of fat you are regularly eating is. Fat is critical for our bodies to function. It makes up the majority of your brain and surrounds every nerve allowing proper signal communication and function throughout your body. When talking about fat, there is good fat and there is bad fat. Processed food like butter and dairy contain the “bad” fats. This is why we need to supplement our diet with the “good” fat for our healthiest selves. Your doctors recommend taking an omega-3 fatty acid found in anchovies and sardine fish oil for this very reason.

So, what is omega-3? Omega-3 is an essential fatty acid which is found in fish, specifically fish oils. For any nutrient to be defined as “essential” means it is required for healthy cell function, therefore any deficiency results in diminished cell function and overall diminished health. We are genetically designed to ingest and digest omega-3 essential fatty acids which are made of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) in the form they are found in nature. If science and experience have taught us anything it is that we cannot improve upon nature and the way we are meant to function.

Research indicates that deficient intake of these essential omega-3 fatty acids is a causal factor to many illnesses including cancer, heart disease, depression, arthritis, stroke, Alzheimer’s, ADHD, diabetes, obesity, digestive disease, osteoporosis, skin problems, vision problems, and developmental delays in children. Omega-3 fatty acid is important for regulating blood sugar, brain health, emotional health, bone health, digestive health, immune health and cancer prevention.2 There is research validating the ingestion of fish oil containing EPA and DHA leading to a decrease in cortical gray matter loss. Loss of brain gray matter leads to neurological disease such as schizophrenia and Alzheimer’s. This evidence proves the necessity for fatty acid in gray matter and overall brain health.3 The take home message: EVERY human requires sufficient intake of EPA and DHA which has nothing to do with which disease they may or may not have. If you are a human, you need EPA and DHA found in omega-3 – period.

The typical American’s diet is deficient in omega-3 and too much consumption of the unsaturated omega-6 fatty acids leading to widespread inflammation and disease. For most, omega-6 intake is almost 11 times greater than omega-3. For better health, the ratio should be closer to 1:1.1 Eating wild and farmed fish out of our world’s polluted water leads to an increase in toxins like mercury and polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) chemicals. This is why Thrive Chiropractic Wellness Center’s doctors recommend Innate Choice Omega Sufficiency omega-3 fish oil because all of those nasty toxins are removed. To receive sufficient amounts from Innate Choice supplements, adults should take 4 capsules and children take 2 capsules for every 40 pounds of body weight. If you have questions or comments, make sure to ask your doctor at your next visit at Thrive CWC. Hope you have a happy healthy day!

Sitting is the New Smoking

Sitting is the New Smoking... most of you have heard this statement already from me and this past month's Innate Lifestyle Newsletter is about just that- the detrimental health effects of sitting.  Our bodies were made to move and the avoidance of such movement or the increased inaction of sitting is toxic to our mind and body.  Getting up every hour to do some PROPER deep squats and the spinal hygiene exercises as seen on our website is a great way to start to counteract those effects of prolonged sitting.  Another great was is to partake in a High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) workout like Spyderwall.

In the meantime, while you're sitting at your computer reading this- why not click the file below to read the Innate Lifestyle Newsletter on this topic.  Then feel free to click the links in this text to watch the video on proper squats and spinal hygiene exercises and give us a call to book your free Spyderwall trial!

Why Spyderwall?

Our bodies were made to move and our movement, or lack there of, clearly is a contributor to the downward spiral we are seeing in the health of our country.  We all have come to be brainwashed to perceive exercise as a tool for improving our sport, achieving weight loss, or improving our body aesthetic.  What we need to understand is that exercise should be viewed as an essential nutrient for our body to fully express health down to the proper expression of our genes.

But WHO has the time to spend 4+ hours a week in the gym?  Not me.  So does that mean don’t do it?  Of course not!  So where does that leave us?  This was the question I presented to myself before I created the Spyderwall.  Exercise has always been a part of who I am and I wasn’t going to let time, or the lack there of, get in the way of my health or my time with my family.  So I did some research about what type of exercise would allow me to make the most of my time working out and I found my answer…High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT).  This research looked at our human ancestors' energy expenditure and determined that we would need to walk at least 12 miles a day additionally to achieve the same daily energy expenditure.  Don’t panic, the research goes on to show that this can be lessened by changing your body composition and Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR), changing insulin sensitivity, and changing the intensity of your exercise.1  What this means is that we need to work out harder, build more lean muscle, and work out for less time.  What this translates into is a HIIT workout style that has high reps, lighter resistance, and has your variable heart rate kept over 120 bpm for the 30 minutes.  This is what I used to create the Spyderwall system.

Spyderwall workouts are 30 minutes long and consist of a minimum of 27 exercise sets for the workout.  The workouts are changed each day so that you could workout 3 days a week for a year and not do the same workout twice.  This allows for the body to continue to be challenged, allowing for the most benefit from your workout.  You see- when we repeat the same workouts our body and muscles get lazy and find the path of least resistance to complete the task, in turn using less muscle and less energy to do the same task.  The research is so clear that spending 30 minutes a day engaging in HIIT is what our bodies need to genetically express health- which is exactly what Spyderwall is designed to do!

Why I hope your New Year's Resolution is NOT to diet...

1/1/2017

Ahh. Christmas goodies. Cookie exchanges. Kids school parties. Work events. There are so many opportunities to eat sugary, low nutrient, yummy foods during the Christmas holiday. Suddenly, the bathroom scale is reading 10 extra pounds. Ugh. Now the logical decision is for your New Year’s resolution to be how you will lose the weight you just gained.

According to Forbes Magazine, 40% of us choose our New Year’s Resolution to get healthy. 92% of all resolutions FAIL. What?!? People don’t find success eating the Cabbage Diet? Or what about the Apple Cider Cleanse? Maybe the Breatharian Diet (Yeah...go look that one up. With aligned breathing, the theory is you don’t need any food or water to survive. Really. Let’s skip that one please).

You know, the word “diet” even brings a negative connotation. Let’s start there. Diet typically means decreasing intake, calories, and/or starving the body of required nutrients. It sets you up for failure. It doesn’t mean we shouldn’t make changes and shift towards better nutrition. Our nutrient deficient, high fat, fast food way of eating has worldwide been named the “Typical American Diet.” Our diets are so devoid of the proper nutrition, proper serving sizes, and proper timing of food and meals, that we have become the example for the world on how NOT to eat.

So now what? Instead of dieting, let’s consider making a lifestyle adjustment. Don’t starve yourself. Eat as much as your body requires, but eat using 3 measures:
  1. Fuel the machine. Your body is your vessel, like your car. You must take your car for an oil change and tire rotation or it will not run as smoothly. That means you need to exercise to strengthen your body and see your Chiropractor to ensure your body is aligned and your nervous system is functioning properly (oh come on. You knew I’d get that necessary plug in there somewhere. But it really is essential to your health). Your car also needs clean gas or it sputters and acts crazy. Before you put any food in your mouth, ask yourself: what is my body (machine) getting from eating this? If it’s a banana, you are getting potassium. If it’s a candy bar, you get nothing but empty calories.
  2. Eat clean. Shop the perimeter of the grocery store. Step away from the box. Back away. You can do it. No processed foods. The more color you can put on a single plate, the better.
  3. Eat mini meals. Yep. Eat more, not less. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are important, but you should also eat a morning and afternoon snack. It will cause you to decrease the size of your meals naturally, because you won’t be as hungry. It will cause your metabolism to increase, which will increase your fat burning potential. Consider making lunch your largest meal. You will increase protein intake during the heart of your day, when you need the most energy and with dinner being a smaller meal, you have a better probability of digesting your final meal completely before going to bed.

By following the above guidelines, there is no need to count calories. There are no mathematical formulas to follow. No confusing ideas or order procedures to memorize. Remember KISS? Keep it simple, stupid. Yeah. In our PC world, calling someone stupid isn’t okay, but you get the idea. Don’t make this more difficult than it needs to be. I also like to suggest to measure your inches instead of living and dying by the bathroom scale. If you find it necessary, use your scale once every 2 weeks, but no more. Inches give you a more exact idea of what is happening with your body anyhow.

So, raise your New Year’s Eve glasses and let’s make a toast to no dieting resolutions for 2017. Do you have more questions? Give us a call at 678-266-3300. We would love to talk over ideas on how you can meet your goals. We would love to assist you in beginning lifestyle changes.  2017 is a great time to get healthier! Happy New Year’s!

Thankful to be a Chiropractor in Milton, GA

As 2012 draws to a close and I reflect back on this eventful year I am so happy that I, my family, and my practice have found our way to Milton.  Milton is such an amazing and unique town and has given us such a warm reception.  I am thrilled to already feel a part of the community after just three short months of being here and am proud to be a chiropractor in Milton, GA.

Relocating a business in the current economic times and leaving a loyal patient base behind in Chicago was not an easy decision for my wife and I, but we had fallen in love with the community of Milton and just felt drawn to the area.  It seemed the perfect place to raise a family and establish my chiropractic roots.  People that we meet who have lived here their whole lives often ask us "Why did you pick Milton of all the places in the world you could have chosen from?"  We tell them- it's the people, the scenery, the climate, the laid back attitude.

I am thankful to be a chiropractor in Milton and to be able to welcome patients from Milton and the nearby communities of:  Canton, Alpharetta, Woodstock, Cumming.  I'm also very appreciative of my patients who commute from: Roswell, Duluth, and Marietta for my unique style of care.  I am so passionate about bringing health to my community that it has been refreshing that my services have been so well received by my new and growing patient base.  It's rewarding to see my vision of what a chiropractic office should be come to fruition.  I look forward to the coming year and to watching my practice and my family THRIVE (couldn't resist) in our new home.  Thank you to all of my current patients and thanks in advance to those in the community that will become patients in 2013.  Happy Holidays and Good Health to All!

Flu vaccine or No Flu Vaccine- That is the Question

11/21/2012

It's that time of year again.  Fall is in full force and winter is close on its heels.  Everywhere you look you are beginning to see the signs of the Christmas season popping up.  With this season comes... Flu Shot Season.  Convenience stores urge you to purchase your holiday decor and offer to throw in a flu shot while you're shopping.  Many patients ask whether I recommend flu shots, so here's my input.

The CDC (Center for Disease Control) randomly tests and records patients who present to clinics and hospitals with flu like symptoms.  These results can be seen on their website at http://www.cdc.gov/flu/weekly/pastreports.htm.  You can view the results broken down by week.  Looking over this data you can see that on any given week the number of specimens positive for influenza falls between 2.6- 10%.  This means that , of the people who appear to have the flu, less than 10% actually have the flu caused by the Influenza virus.  This is not the data that is widely reported in the media however.  When we hear statistics of the number of people infected by the flu this data is skewed.  The "flu" case data we are given is technically classified as Influenza Like Illness (ILI).  Anyone seeing a health care practitioner with any one of the following: sore throat, fever, nasal congestion, body aches, fatigue or headache can get classified into the ILI data without confirmation that the Influenza virus is indeed the culprit.  If you do the quick math, this means that flu data is inflated in the media more than 90%.  This also means that if you had been vaccinated for the flu you still have a great chance of suffering a flu like illness because the vaccine only has the potential to be effective against the Influenza virus, not ILI.

Let's play Devil's Advocate.  Some might say, "What would it hurt to get the vaccine anyway, even if there's only a small chance it will help me?  I mean, they're throwing it in free with the purchase of a strand of Christmas lights, so why not?"

I'll give you two compelling reasons.  The first is the ingredients contained in most flu vaccines.  Ask the person administering the shot for a list of ingredients.  By law they have to provide you with a list. Most people know that there has been a movement to remove Mercury from vaccines.  Instead you may see the lesser known Thimerisol, which is actually a Mercury derivative and a neurotoxin.  You may also see: formaldehyde, aluminum, monkey kidney, and/or MSG (monosodium glutamate).  ALL of these are known to be harmful to your health.  Information about flu vaccine ingredients can also be found on the CDC's website at : http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/pubs/pinkbook/downloads/appendices/B/excipient-table-2.pdf.  Skeptics may say, "I don't believe that they would be allowed to put something in a vaccine that they know is harmful."  These same skeptics would probably be shocked to learn that our vaccine manufacturers are not required to prove the safety of vaccines before manufacture, nor are they held liable when harmful side effects occur.  I wouldn't purchase a product from a company that wasn't held liable for its safety and I certainly wouldn't inhale or inject that product into my body.

The second reason to avoid vaccines is this: you may actually be exposing yourself to a virus that you would otherwise not come in contact with.  If less than 10% of flu like cases are actually caused by the Influenza virus, why risk knowingly exposing yourself  to a virus you might not otherwise be exposed to?  I find it alarming that the populations typically targeted most heavily to get the flu vaccine: children, pregnant women, and the elderly also typically have the most volatile immune systems.

It is ultimately your choice, but you do have a choice.  You can choose to learn how to make your immune system naturally stronger and effective like it was designed to do or you can roll the dice with a flu vaccine.  In my professional opinion you have a greater chance of preventing the flu or Influenza Like Illness by taking strides to strengthen your immune system naturally through eating right, exercise, chiropractic care, and supplements.

The pharmaceutical companies have deep pockets are have spent lots of marketing dollars to convince you that avoiding flu vaccines is irresponsible.  I do realize that there may be side effects* to the sudden realization that pharmaceutical companies may in fact be motivated by money and not the best interest of your health.  If you are a patient of mine and are still considering the flu vaccine please feel free to continue the conversation at your next appointment.  I welcome further questions and discussion on this topic.  If you are not a patient and would like to schedule a free consultation please call 678-266-3300.

EVERYONE should watch this movie.  If you care about the quality of food you are eating this movie is a must.  It will definitely open your eyes to the industrial food business.  The educated food shopper is the smart food shopper.  The latest movement by some companies is to get congress to pass acceptance of more and more GMOs (genetically modified foods) allowing companies to ENGINEER food in a lab now to get them to grow bigger, faster, fatter, cheaper.  This practice has profound negative effects on our health.  This video will change the way you think about food.

Walking the Walk

Would you ever go to a dentist that has bad teeth?  Would you ever take weight loss advice from someone who is excessively overweight?  I certainly hope not.  I get so frustrated when I go to a seminar on nutrition and wellness living and see the presenter slugging back a Coke (or even more disturbing- a Diet Coke), being overweight, and/or slouching.  It blows my mind.  I believe that it would be hypocritical to recommend a healthy harmonious lifestyle to my patients without living that life myself.  I practice what I preach.  I tell all of my patients that if I recommend something for them to do or try (dietary suggestions, exercise recommendations, detoxifications, etc.) they can rest assured that it is something that I myself do or have tried.

I treated quite a few athletes who were participating in the Chicago Marathon last year and who were experiencing various muscle aches as a result of the extensive training.  Many asked my opinion on ways to avoid DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness).  I started recommending ice baths, but it quickly occurred to me that I have never actually tried an ice bath myself.  Because I believe so strongly that I must be able to speak to my patients from experience when making recommendations, I decided to test the suggested ice bath after my next flag football game.  That next Sunday after my game I ran by 7-Eleven and picked up 3 twenty pound bags of ice.  I filled our tub at home with enough water to cover my torso and allowed my wife the honors of dumping the 60 pounds of ice over my submerged body.  I’m certain she enjoyed this way more than I did, but the point was that I could now speak from experience about the ice bath when recommending it.  You can assume that any information you find here on my Health Blog has already been doctor tested and approved.

Why see a Pediatric Chiropractor?

8/28/2012

It is extremely scary to see and realize what kids in today’s world are up against.  Illnesses and diagnoses that were very rare a long time ago are now being diagnosed at an alarming rate.  Why is this?  Is it because we have better diagnostic tools to identify these illnesses?  Is it because our genes are changing or these illnesses are hereditary?  Is it because these kids just have bad luck?  I think we all know the answer to all those questions is a very emphatic NO.

These issues that we are seeing in our youth are issues that can be avoided, treated, and prevented with combining Pediatric Chiropractic Care, the right lifestyle path, and without compounding the problem with the side effects of some of the very powerful medications prescribed to treat them.  We are seeing more and more kids on methylphenidates, which is the generic brand-name of ADHD drugs such as Ritalin, Concera, and Daytrana.  Accompanying those medications is a list of side effects ranging from headache and mild joint pain to sudden, unexplained death.  A recent study published in the American Journal of Psychiatry suggests that certain stimulant medications used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) may cause sudden, unexplained death,1 adding to previous reports emphasizing the potential dangers of such medications.1-2  In their conclusion, the study authors state: "This study reports a significant association or 'signal' between sudden unexplained death and the use of stimulant medication, specifically methylphenidate. While the data does have limitations that preclude a definitive conclusion, our findings draw attention to the potential risks of stimulant medications for children and adolescents." They add: "Although sudden unexplained death is a rare event, this finding should be considered in the context of other data about the risk and benefit of stimulants in medical treatment."1  That is a scary association.

Luckily we have groups out there, such as the ICPA (International Pediatric Chiropractic Association) who train and certify Pediatric Chiropractors and do studies to prove that you do have a choice in the treatment of these types of conditions for your kids.  Pediatric Chiropractic care is very safe and effective at promoting and improving the overall health of out children.  The ICPA in its release referencing a recent study titled "The Chiropractic Care of Patients With Attention Deficit Disorder: A Retrospective Analysis." According to the ICPA, the study, which has been accepted for publication, "shows promising results for children under chiropractic care."  There are safe alternative choices for dealing with these conditions and seeing a Pediatric Chiropractor is one of them.

Thrive Chiropractic Wellness Center is committed to being your Pediatric Chiropractor in Milton, GA serving the surrounding communities of Alpharetta, Cumming, Canton, Roswell, and Crabapple.

For the third straight year in a row Dr. Jeremy was chairman of the Golf Committee for the Foglia YMCA Charity Golf Outing.  This outing is one of two major fund raisers for the Chicago Area YMCA.  The funds generated from this outing are used to supply local kids and families with financial help for camps, sports, after school functions, memberships, scholarships, and other family YMCA functions. This year the outing was on Monday, May 21, 2012 and was held at the prestigious Wynstone Country Club in Barrington, IL.   The weather was beautiful and the event was a huge success.  As a matter of fact, the event was the most successful Golf Outing that the YMCA has ever hosted and raised over $40,000 in scholarship money!
